ARC Laureate Fellow & Scientia Professor of AI

Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Critical Infrastructure: Opportunities, Risks, and Responsibility
Artificial intelligence is rapidly moving from an experimental tool to decision making partner in engineering, with profound implications for safety-critical infrastructure such as dams and tailings facilities. In this keynote, Professor Toby Walsh draws on his global leadership in AI research and governance to explain what today’s AI systems can — and cannot — do, and how they are likely to evolve over the next decade. He explores how AI may transform monitoring, design, risk assessment, and operational decision-making, while also introducing new challenges around trust, accountability, and resilience. The session equips engineers and decision-makers with a clear, realistic principles for engaging with a “smart future” without compromising safety, professional judgement, or public trust.
